I grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Rutgers University in 1966. I completed my Masters in Counseling at Rutgers in 1968 and then served in the Army Medical Corp for two years. I came to IU and completed my Ed.D. in Counseling in 1973. I worked as the Counseling Consultant for the Indiana State Department of Education until 1976 when I joined the faculty at IU in the School of Continuing Studies. I taught part time in the Adult Education Department and Counseling Department at IU Bloomington and edited the Jossey Bass New Directions publication titled Counseling Adult Learners. I have served on the Board of Directors of the National University of Continuing Education Association. I have been with IU for 33 years in the School of Continuing Studies and must hold the record for spending all 33 years in the same building, Owen Hall.

I have a specific interest in the important roles of active listening and dialogue in adult education because I believe that listening and dialogue are critical skills in teaching and learning. I want students to comfortably express and critically evaluate their opinions and beliefs and to translate their knowledge, understanding and skills into practical application in adult education. I help teach medical students active listening to patients in the IU medical school physician-patient relationship course. I especially enjoy giving presentations and teaching others how to conduct training and give presentations. My wife Ruth and I have three children, and five grandchildren. I like to swim, play golf, and acrylic painting. Frank teaches ACE-D 500, 512, and 640. |
