HIGH SCHOOL COURSES — INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM

Science Courses

11E - Introductory Earth and Space Science Level I: First Semester

Correspondence
Investigates three basic areas of science: astronomy, geology, and physical geography. Topics include the universe, the solar system, the Earth-Moon system, minerals, and processes of Earth's crust. National award winner.

12E - Introductory Earth and Space Science Level I: Second Semester

Correspondence
Continues Science 11E, with a focus on the planet Earth. Topics include earthquakes and continental drift; Earth's geologic history; life records in rock formations; the atmosphere, weather, and the hydrosphere; and human impact on the environment. Prerequisites: None, but Science 11E or one semester of high school Earth science recommended.

21B - Biology Level I: First Semester

Online / Correspondence
Introductory biology course concerned with the methods of science, the nature of life, and the world of living things. Examines the chemical aspects of life, the role of DNA, reproduction, and the principles of heredity and development. Uses CD-ROM virtual lab. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word.

21P - Physical Science: An Introduction to Chemistry (Integrated Chemistry-Physics)

Online / Correspondence
An introduction to the study of physical science with an emphasis on chemistry. Explores the scientific method; formation of scientific theories, specifically the atomic theory; various interactions of matter, organic chemistry, and biochemistry; and chemistry involved in searching for alternative energy sources. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word. Prerequisites: None but requires some basic mathematics for conversions in the metric system and in the solution of simple equations.

22B - Biology Level I: Second Semester

Online / Correspondence
Concerned primarily with the study of protists, plants, and animals; the chemical and nervous control systems; population biology; and the role of humans in the total ecosystem. The environment receives special attention throughout the course. Uses CD-ROM virtual lab.

22P - Physical Science: An Introduction to Physics (Integrated Chemistry-Physics)

Online / Correspondence
Emphasizes basic, nontechnical understanding of the following and their relationship to our daily lives: force, motion, energy, sound, light, electricity, magnetism, and electronics. The laboratory components are designed to further scientific thinking and depth of knowledge in certain areas of physics. NOTE: Online course requires Microsoft Word. Prerequisites: None, but a semester of physical science is recommended.

41P - Physics Level I: First Semester

Correspondence
Basic concepts of physics and the mathematical tools required to work with them. Includes forces, vectors, motion, heat, energy, wave motion, kinetic theory of gases, and light. Prerequisites: One year of high school algebra, one year of high school geometry, and one semester of trigonometry.

42P - Physics Level I: Second Semester

Correspondence
Includes optics and light, electricity, magnetism, electromagnetism, quantum theory, and nuclear physics. Prerequisites: Science 41P or one semester of physics and one year of high school algebra, one year of high school geometry, and one semester of trigonometry.
