UNDERGRADUATE COURSES — INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM

Completion Time Limits
Independent Study Program courses are designed to cover a full semester of material and typically take 12 to 18 weeks to complete. However, you have one full year from the date you register to complete a course. You may have two extensions of six months each, except where noted in course descriptions. The nonrefundable fee for the first extension is $35 per credit hour for undergraduate courses ($105 for a 3 credit hour course). The nonrefundable fee for the second extension is $70 per credit hour for undergraduate courses ($210 for a 3 credit hour course). To request your first extension, fill out the First Extension Request form.

If you live outside the United States and Canada or have an APO or FPO address, you have 18 months to complete a correspondence course in that you automatically receive your first six-month extension free of charge. We grant this extension for correspondence courses to compensate for postal delays. Please note that we do not grant this extension for online courses, since all lessons are submitted and returned via the World Wide Web.

Important: If you have deadlines for receiving your final grade in a course, keep in mind that you must complete a course - including all assignments and exams - at least three weeks before you need your final course grade. Please keep in mind that instructors are often away from campus during vacation periods. If you need to finish a course by a certain time, we advise you to learn your instructor's schedule for summer vacations and between-semester breaks.

If you are unable to finish your course in the allotted time, you can choose to do nothing, in which case you will be system-dropped, and it will be as if you never enrolled in the course. We will not post an F or Incomplete on your official record; you can, however, receive an official W on your official record by filling out and submitting the Course Withdrawal Request form.
